Tim Carpenter’s REHEARSALS FOR DEPARTURE is, both literally and figuratively, a peculiar “body of work.” These new color photographs, made in the same semi-rural midwestern landscape he has explored in his previous books, are less a sequence of “decisive moments” than a series of fleeting moments of recalibration — the subtle repetitions and reassessments of a sensate and sentient body moving in time through a physical world. No final solutions, no perfect versions (sometimes not even “subject matter” per se) — only the endless, often playful, reckoning of an organism (a self) working with a camera, entangled with concrete and steel, wood and water. The book’s slightly off-kilter design favors a sense of motion, variation and process over a conventional emphasis on hero images and greatest hits.
